ATV Capital Of Idaho
Mackay Idaho has gone all in on ATVing and off roading.
They have dubbed themselves the ATV Capital of Idaho™ and the ATV Capital of the West™. And yes, they have trademarked it. (I checked out of curiosity).
But, they have let their ATV Capital of the West trademark lapse, so that opens up an opportunity for another town to become the ATV Capital of the West 🙂
This is a small remote town, in the middle of nowhere on the way to nowhere. But, we’re here for the ATVing not the fancy restaurants and boutiques with overpriced jewelry, so this suits us just fine.
What Mackay has they intend to use to the best of their advantage. And what they have is natural beauty and wide open space.
Ideal for nature lovers of all kinds: white water rafters, hikers, fishermen and off roaders.
The city of Mackay is very ATV friendly, they allow ATVs, SXSx, UTVs, to be driven on any city street or alley. From any place in Mackay, you can head out in any direction and access 100s of miles of roads and trails.
One of the most popular rides is the Mine Hill Trail which takes you on a scenic 15 mile drive through the low lying hills as you visit the now abandoned mines of a one thriving mining community.

Salome is the perfect relaxing winter getaway. Temperatures are 62 degrees in December and January and make it all the way up to 68 degrees in February. Pretty hard to beat that!
If you’re looking for action, then Salome is not for you.
There are no concerts, fancy restaurants, cultural events or really anything much at all going on.
For a taste of small town life, check out a basketball or football game at the local high school.
40 minutes down the road in Quartzsite AZ is the annual Rock and Gem Show held in January and February.
When I attended this event over 30 years ago, it had a couple dozen vendors and an Indian Fry Bread Taco truck, but it’s really blown up over the years with over a million visitors a year.
Explore The Arizona Peace Trail
Not only is Salome on the Arizona Peace Trail, but this campground also offers direct trail access to 300 miles of trails. Explore the serene surrounding desert and visit some of the many abandoned mines in the area.
If you don’t have your own ride, rentals are available in Salome and Quartsite. Want to learn more about the area, take a guided tour with Mark West at Adventures UTV.

In New England, it’s not as easy to find great riding as it is out west. But that doesn’t mean great riding isn’t available – you just need to know where to look.
So, while everyone else is heading to the coast, ATVers are heading inland to this ATV paradise.
Exploring The Highlands Of Maine
This campground is located in an area of Maine referred to locally as The Highlands which includes Moosehead Lake. I usually toss The Forks into the Highlands, but technically The Forks isn’t part of the Highlands – it’s right next door.
Hands down, this is the best area of Maine for ATV riding. Dirt roads and trails abound!
With 1,000 miles of designated Maine ATV trails you can ride out from the campground in all directions. You can ride to Greenville on Moosehead Lake, Jackman, The Forks, Rockwood, Bingham and Cambridge.
There are other campgrounds with ATV trails in this region, but Balsam Woods is one of the best.

This is one of the oldest campground serving Wolf Pen Gap ATV riding area.
It’s a big, comfortable campground with everything you need including a nice hot shower.
Wolf Pen Gap has excellent riding with 50 miles of trail loops in the Ouachita National Forest. Enjoy rides through heavily forested mountains with lush green views.
It’s hot and humid during the summer, so I’d recommend riding during the shoulder season.
Trails open in early March, but plan on Lots Of Mud! if you go during Spring. Tons of people love the mud, so Spring is also the busiest season.
The trails vary in difficulty from easy to advanced. They’re well marked, so it’s easy to navigate.

Big rigs welcome. They can accommodate up to 95’.
KOAs are a bit of a mixed bag, some are awesome, most are good enough, very few are outright terrible. This one is good, not awesome.
Like most KOAs, this one is crazy big and busy with fairly crowded sites. But there are fun family friendly events plus plenty of amenities. And the location can’t be beat!
This KOA is is the only full service privately owned campground with ride in ride out access to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.
Ocean Front ATVing
The Oregon Dunes are one of the premier off roading dunes in the US; they’re big – 47 miles long and 31,500 acres.
There are 3 separate riding areas, each with it’s own unique riding environment from sandy trails, beach front riding and epic hills.
The beach is a 2 miles ATV ride from the campground through the dunes to reach the beach. If you go by car, the beach is about 10 minutes away.
Like all KOAs, this campground is family friendly with kid friendly activities and events thoughout the summer including catch and release fishing, paddle boats and ice cream socials.
If you don’t have an ATV, there are several rental companies conveniently located.

This pretty ATV campground is located along Clear Stream. The stream isn’t much to write home about, but the kids will enjoy it. It’s just big enough for tubing or a refreshing swim.
With 22 sites on 10 acres, this campground doesn’t jam you in like sardines. Some sites are closer than others, but there are a few sweet spots in the trees that offer a bit more room.
Overall, this campground has a nice feel – lots of grass and plenty of trees.
Clear Stream Campground has direct trail access to 1,000+ miles of Ride The Wilds Trails.
Besides the Highlands in Maine, Ride The Wilds is about as good as it gets when it comes to off roading in the NE.
One ride that you should consider is the 40 mile trip from the campground to Jericho State Park.
Jericho has a beautiful lake and it’s own 75 mile OHV trail system for more riding opportunities. The trails take you into the rolling hills with beautiful overlooks of the region.
